What is complex trauma?

PTSD usually traces back to a specific event or events: an accident, an assault, a single overwhelming experience. Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is different. It tends to come from prolonged or repeated exposure to difficult or unsafe circumstances, often starting early in life, things like childhood neglect, ongoing family dysfunction, or repeated relational harm.

It doesn't always look like flashbacks or hypervigilance. More often it looks like a harsh inner critic, trouble trusting people or feeling safe in relationships, difficulty regulating emotion, and a shaky sense of who you actually are underneath it all. A lot of what gets written off as "just my personality" or "just how I am" is often complex trauma wearing a disguise. This is the area of the work I care about most.

My approach

My approach is rooted in traditional talk therapy: a strong clinical relationship, paired with specific tools and modalities where they're useful. The goal isn't just managing symptoms; it's helping you meet yourself with less shame and more steadiness, so the rest of your life has more room to move.

Modalities I draw on

I bring these in when they're useful for what you're working through, not as a fixed protocol every client goes through.

Psychodynamic

A lot of our work is understanding how your past, especially your early relationships and family of origin, shows up in your present. We look at the patterns you learned to survive, where they came from, and how they might be getting in the way now. This is usually the throughline underneath everything else.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS shows up more in language and values than as structured "parts" work in every session. I tend to think in terms of parts: the part that protects, the part that's exhausted, the part that's still scared, and that lens shapes how we talk about what's going on for you, even outside formal IFS work. For clients who want to go deeper into that process specifically, we can.

CBT & ACT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are woven throughout our work in smaller, consistent ways: noticing patterns in how you think, building tolerance for discomfort, and getting clearer on what you actually want your life to look like.

Somatic work

Trauma and stress live in the body as much as the mind. When it's useful, we'll pay attention to what's happening physically, like tension, breath, and nervous system activation, alongside whatever we're talking through.

Motivational interviewing

Especially useful early on, or when part of you wants something to change and part of you isn't sure. This approach makes space for that ambivalence instead of pushing past it.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured approach for reprocessing specific traumatic memories. It's available for clients who want it, but it isn't something everyone needs. We'll talk through whether it makes sense for you specifically, rather than assuming it's the plan.
